The Windows Group Policy Editor (also known as gpedit.msc) is a tool built into Windows operating systems that allows administrators to configure and manage system settings and policies for computers and users within a network or on a local machine. It provides a centralized way to control settings related to security, desktop configurations, software installation, user permissions, and more, all based on a set of policies.
Group policies can be applied at two main levels:
Local Group Policy: These policies apply to the local computer, and are used when managing a single machine.
Domain Group Policy: These policies are typically used in enterprise environments where computers are part of a domain and are managed by a network administrator.
The editor allows users to modify settings that affect the operating system’s behavior, including:
Security settings (e.g., password policies, account lockout policies)
User interface settings (e.g., hiding certain system components)
System configuration (e.g., controlling startup options, software installations)
Network settings (e.g., configuring network shares, remote desktop access)
The Group Policy Editor is generally available in Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions. It may not be accessible in the Home edition unless manually enabled through other methods.
We will learn some essential policies to apply in every windows domain environment to streamline & secure harden the windows server security.
